Biography

Born in Philadelphia 21th January 1939 Campbell studied architecture at Temple University in the city. He went on to own a Construction company while continuing to paint, a lifelong passion. In 1970 Campbell opened ‘Gallery 35’ in Westmont New Jersey close to Philadelphia, in response to the number of private commissions he received and in order to exhibit his works. His subjects included city views, landscapes of Bucks County, views along the Jersey shore and figurative subjects. In the 1990’s he closed his gallery to exhibit in Lambertville NJ.

It was the tragedy of 9/11 that inspired Campbell to concentrate on painting New York subjects replete with flags, very much influenced by Childe Hassam and later Guy Wiggins. These works capture the spirit and atmosphere of the city, the winter chill and the shimmering summer heat and with the prominence of the flags a real sense of patriotism. Campbell continued to exhibit at Lambertville until he retired in 2003, he died in 2024.
