Biography
Son of David Adolph Constant Artz (1837-1890) he was one of the most celebrated Hague school painters along with such artists as Joseph Israels (1824-1911), Bernardus Johannes Blommers (1845-1914) and Jacob Henricus Maris (1837-1899). David Artz studied under the great master Jacob Israels and obviously the qualities of these artists’ works were handed down to Constant Artz. The Hague in Holland at the end of the nineteenth century certainly had its share of fine artists, many of them painting direct from nature and capturing the feel of the local people and the local landscape.
The young Constant Artz was no exception choosing as his favourite subject small paintings of ducks and geese by the riverbanks. Artz was at his finest painting on panel where he could almost produce beautiful quality combined with the magnificent Dutch lighting. These subjects of his were captured on small panels rather than large canvases. For a time Constant Artz studied under the master Hendrik Willem Mesdag (1831-1915) who was also painting in The Hague up to his death in 1915.
