August Willem van Voorden
(1881 - 1921)
August Willem van Voorden was a painter of the streets and docks of that city and in addition, a painter of still lifes.
Van Voorden studied at the Rotterdam Academy 1893-1900 and worked for most of his life in the city of his birth, in 1908 in Kortenhoef and 1912-1913 in Nieuw-Loosdrecht. He had studied with Alexander Henri Robert van Maasdijk (1856-1931) and with Jan de Jong (1864-1901). Van Voorden painted in both oil and watercolour in a style very much derived from that of George Hendrik Breitner (1857-1923) the Rotterdam born artist who worked in Paris and then Amsterdam, and was amongst the leading Dutch Impressionists.
Van Voorden was awarded silver medals at Barcelona in 1991 and in Amsterdam in 1912 and was also elected to the ‘Arti et Amicitiae’ in that same city. He died in Rotterdam in 1921.
