Everardus Benedictus Gregorius Pagano Mirani was born in Amsterdam on 12th March 1810, to a Dutch mother and a father born in Italy, one of ten children. Mirani grew up in a Golden Age of Dutch painting, dominated by the Romantic landscape genre, a movement founded by Barend Cornelis Koekkoek (1803-1862) and Andreas Schelfhout (1787-1870). It was, as a pupil of the latter, that Mirani developed his own Romanticised style of landscape painting. Mirani painted the Dutch landscape in summer and winter, forest scenes with gnarled oaks, extensive summer landscapes, distant views of Haarlem and the winter scenes beloved by the Dutch, frozen rivers and canals with skaters. Mirani exhibited widely, in Amsterdam and The Hague from 1840 to 1880 and at other cities in The Netherlands. In 1850, Mirani was elected to the prestigious ‘Arti et Amicitae’ in Amsterdam, a society to promote the arts that included the finest painters of the period. A distinguished painter in his own right, Mirani was a true Dutch Romantic in the great tradition of his masters, Andreas Schelfhout and Barend Cornelis Koekkoek. His works can be found in museums in: Amsterdam; Haarlem; The Hague and Leeuwarden.
