Provenance: Private Collection, UK Artist Biography: Pieter Lodewijk Francisco Kluyver is recorded as being a pupil of an artist by the name of M. de Root and lived and worked in Amsterdam until 1848. At this date, he moved the short distance to Amersfoort, eventually returning to Amsterdam to live around 1883.

Kluyver was noted for his panoramic landscapes in which the typically low horizons are reminiscent of the seventeenth century Dutch landscape painters, notably Philip de Koninck (1619-1688), also Amsterdam born and a pupil of Rembrandt Harmensz van Rijn (1606-1669). Among his contemporaries, his works can be compared with the panoramic landscapes of Andreas Schelfhout (1787-1870) and Salomon Leonardus Verveer (1813-1876) but Kluyver’s lush foliage, his use of colour and his characteristic effect of sunlight, indisputably mark him as one of the leading landscape painters of the nineteenth century. Kluyver exhibited extensively, in Amsterdam and The Hague, from 1838 to 1886.

His works can be found in museums in: Groningen; Haarlem and The Hague.
